One Word Everyday Vocabulary app for iPhone and iPad

One-Word Everyday Vocabulary (OWEV) provides practice and progress monitoring to help your students learn 320 useful vocabulary words!

A variety of learners will benefit from the app, including young children, students for whom English is a second language, and children who have a condition that affects the way they acquire language. Some adults might also benefit, such as those who are recovering from a stroke or head injury.

Each module of the assessment is based on a common theme. Four pictures are presented, and a verbal prompt asks the user to look at the pictures and touch the one that matches the spoken word. There are ten target words in each module, with a total of 32 modules in all:

When a response is correct, a reinforcement sound will be made and the incorrect images will be dimmed. The printed name of the correct answer will appear. When a response is incorrect, no sound is made, and all the images are dimmed.

The application has two primary uses. One is as a practice activity in which the child works more or less independently. The other is as a learning activity in which the images serve as a series of interactive prompts that are discussed by a student and an adult. The learning activity will help the student build an association between a spoken word and the corresponding image.

Each module of the OWEV app can be completed easily in two minutes or less when used for practice. When used in the learning mode, it will take longer because of the interaction between the adult and the student.

The student’s performance is measured by the percent correct. Ideally, with practice, the student will master all of the words. Once mastery has been achieved, the student is periodically administered a review assessment to monitor retention. Additional practice is provided to the student, as necessary, in order to maintain the mastery level.
